The announcement that the UK West Midlands is a testbed for 5G (WM5G) is just this with an example showcase announced by the West Midlands combined authority of a haptic vibration feedback glove and remote doctor and field medical operative wearing a head-mounted camera being able to be the “doctors eyes and hands” at the scene of the emergency and patient. It is not understating when they say this “saves lives” for obvious reasons.

This will have challenges with the planned upgrade of the current airwaves services to the new emergency service network ESN delivered by EE as a primary provider that functions on a dedicated spectrum on 4G. This will need to be further upgraded to this new 5G spectrum once proven reliable. The Birmingham 5G NHS pilot states as developed by BT so it will remain unclear how this impacts the ESM and extended network EAS to rural areas and places to preserve coverage. The UK while highly competitive national telecoms network will have to deal with the myriad of commercial interested of individual operators seeking to push their 5G network coverage services which looks like will remain in individual city areas like London and Birmingham until the technology showcases are proven and some coordinated national 5G strategy becomes evident.
